Randy’s Tree Tie-Down

While working on a few bonsai trees recently I was remembering the habit of some of my bonsai to fall over, sometimes even in a slight wind. We’ve had some pretty good winter storms here in Arizona this year, and trees falling on one another has been the cause of more than one broken branch recently. So I learned from a bonsai expert how to hold down my bonsai so they won't blow over...

This bonsai fell over in a recent storm, it was not damaged but the landscape and pot were messed up big time. Sitting on top of a bench with a 2×6 top board's Randy starts by making a loop from the front of the tree around either side of the container, putting the rope ends around the bottom of the board back up to the very front of the bonsai.

He then moves the rope over the pot on either side of the trunk with a pull point at the front and center of the bonsai tree. Putting one side of the loop through the pull point.

Pulling the rope tight from both ends create tension at the knot; hold it in place with your thumb.

Make a standard double rope knot with a Mooring Hitch so that it can be pulled apart easily.

Mooring Hitch Knot Tying Instructions

  1. Make a turn around a post and then form a loop with the free end exiting the loop on the inside (leave longer free end than illustrated).

  2. Grasp the standing line and pull a section through your loop.

  3. Grasp a section of the free end (but not the very end) and pull part way through the new loop.

  4. Tighten the knot by pulling down on the standing line. Release the knot by pulling the free end.

Get the Mooring Hitch along with 19 other essential rope knots on the Pro-Knot waterproof plastic cards here (click here).

Take the time to tie down trees to prevent accidents. You never know when the wind or a storm season might knock over a tree, which can cause you years of misfortune; if you’re afflicted like me.
