What is the difference between Chinese Bonsai and a Japanese Bonsai tree?

First, of is the name, Chinese Bonsai are known as Penjing (Pen-jing). Bonsai (Bon-sai), then, literally translates as a tree in a container or slab, and Penjing denotes a "landscape in a container or slab". So Penjing is more so including rocks, water, other plants, so on... Sceneries with a miniaturized tree or trees. The older styles of Penjing also included wild looking roots and trunk on the trees (illustration below).

Both the Bonsai and Pinjing

nowadays are almost

undisguisable, but the

Chinese Penjing is more so including a scenery look to them and Japanese Bonsai are more so a tree in a container or slab.

What is a Bonsai?

Bonsai are a miniature tree or trees that are Asian origin in appearance. Miniature trees within a container or on a slab, usually under 3' tall are considered a Bonsai, larger Bonsai are about 6'6" tall (some are considered to be a Topiary than a true Bonsai). Remember any tree species can be used to grow one. The art of miniature trees is over 2000 years old in China and over 1000 years old in Japan.
